5 AC Sounds That Are OKAY To Hear

Monday, July 18th, 2022 at 11:00 am

two-technicians-working-on-air-conditionerMost people assume that if their AC unit is making noise, it’s probably a bad thing. The number of blogs you’ll read that warn about strange AC sounds doesn’t help put your mind at ease either.

But don’t get too upset yet! AC units are not silent — they make a certain amount of noise as part of their normal operation. Let’s put your worries to rest and discuss the sounds that are OK for your AC unit to be making.

Gentle Humming

All motors make noise, right? AC units are no different. When the air conditioner kicks on you will hear a gentle humming as the compressor goes about its job exchanging heat to cool the air.

If the humming gets excessive, you don’t notice cool air coming out, or the AC takes a while to get started, there could be something wrong. Otherwise, it’s just business as usual for the AC unit.

Fan Sounds

AC units use a blower fan to push cool air through the system and circulate it throughout your home. However, AC fans are not as silent as the typical ceiling fan. Instead, they make steady fan sounds similar to that of a typical box fan.

Rattling Ducts

Some of the ductwork in your system is made of metal. If you remember back to high school science class, metal expands and contracts as it is heated and cooled. This can cause clicking or rattling sounds in the system.

It should only last a few minutes when the system is coming on. Rattling at other times might mean loose ductwork, in which case you may need AC repair in St. Augustine FL.

Dripping Water

Ever hear dripping sounds coming from inside your AC unit? Since dripping water is usually a bad thing, this can really make some homeowners nervous when they hear it. After all, water and electronics don’t go together.

However, in the case of an air conditioner, this is normal. Because of the temperature differences, there is considerable condensation that gathers inside your unit.

But, not to worry, there is a drainage system in place to take the water outside your house. In fact, that’s why you hear water moving, it’s on its way outside.

Whooshing Air

The AC unit pulls fresh air into your home through interior supply vents. Sometimes this air can make a quiet whooshing sound as it comes rushing into your home.

If the sound is new or very loud, there may be an air supply issue or blockage. However, a gentle whooshing sound is perfectly normal.

Not-So-Ordinary Sounds

The bottom line is to pay attention and get used to what your AC unit sounds like. Anything out of the ordinary can mean there is a problem and you should call in a professional. The longer you leave an issue unattended, the worse it can become.
