Why is My AC Breaking Down so Often?

Monday, September 26th, 2016 at 11:00 am

All air conditioners need repairs every once in a while. However, for most of the air conditioner’s life those repairs should be pretty few and far between. If your air conditioner is breaking down multiple times a year, it could be an indication of a more serious problem that needs to be dealt with. Let’s take a look at why your air conditioner might be breaking down so often.

It’s Not Getting Enough Maintenance

Air conditioners need regular professional maintenance in order to stay in the best possible condition, especially during the summer when they’re under increased stress. If they don’t get this maintenance, they will suffer the full effects of time and wear over the years. This causes various parts to malfunction more easily, which will cause the air conditioner to break down more easily. Make sure that you’re scheduling air conditioning maintenance at least once a year, preferably in spring so that it can be properly prepared for summer.

Environmental Issues

It’s possible that there are environmental factors that are causing your air conditioner to break down more often than it normally would. Salt in the air can cause parts of your air conditioner to degrade and break down years earlier than they otherwise would, even with annual preventive maintenance. Talk to your HVAC technician about this possibility, and see if you need to take additional steps to protect your air conditioner from this.

Age

It’s also possible that your air conditioner is just too old to keep up anymore. If your air conditioner is past 20 years old, it’s likely got so much wear and tear on it that it needs to be replaced. Your HVAC professional should tell you if that’s the case.
