How Can Duct Sealing Help with My Cooling?

Monday, July 6th, 2015 at 11:00 am

If you have a ducted air conditioning system, you know how important it is to have ductwork that is effective and in good shape. But what if yours isn’t? What if your ductwork is faulty and you are losing precious cool air each time your air conditioning system operates? One solution is to hire the experts at Climate Masters for professional duct sealing services.

What Is Duct Sealing?

Contrary to popular belief, duct sealing involves a lot more than a roll of duct tape. In fact, duct tape isn’t a part of professional duct sealing. The materials used by a trained technician when performing duct sealing are mastic, a fibrous adhesive that becomes a hard seal, and professional tape, such as fiberglass or foil tape.

What Is the Process?

Your technician will first inspect your entire ductwork system to find the areas that need sealing. Once all the areas have been pinpointed, he or she will cover the cracks and holes with mastic, then apply a piece of tape on top of the wet mastic to help secure the bond. If there are sections that need bonding, the end of each section will be coated with mastic; the ends will be joined and sheet metal binding wrapped around the joint. Sheet metal nails secure the binding, and the mastic cures into a seal.

What Does Sealing Do?

Sealing your ducts means holes, cracks and disconnections are now covered, and the seal, while hard, is flexible enough to bend with the normal expansion and contraction of your ductwork. Duct sealing puts a stop to air loss, helping to:

  • Increase energy efficiency
  • Increase indoor air quality
  • Extend the life of your ductwork system
