Where the Cooling Comes From

Heat pumps works by transferring heat from one location to another, and refrigerant is used to facilitate this process. In the winter months, heat is absorbed from the outside air, concentrated, and then delivered to your living spaces; during the summer, the heat is absorbed from your indoors and transferred outdoors. The key to switching from heating to cooling lay in one component: the reversing valve. This valve changes the directional flow of the heat pump’s refrigerant, allowing the heat pump to heat or cool your home.

Why Consider a Heat Pump for Cooling?

There are a number of reasons why you may want to consider a heat pump as your home’s air conditioner:

  • Energy efficient – a heat pump uses about 25% of the energy a traditional air conditioning system uses, making it a very energy efficient system.
  • Can be ducted or ductless – heat pump systems can deliver the air via ductwork or through indoor ductless blowers.
  • Removes more humidity – heat pumps remove up to 30% more humidity than other kinds of air conditioning systems.
  • Longer lifespan – traditional air conditioning systems have average lifespans of 10-12 years; heat pumps have an average lifespan of 20-25 years.

Heat pumps are complicated units, and as such, they should always be handled by trained professionals. If you think a heat pump system may be a good air conditioner for your St. Augustine, FL, home, call us today and schedule an appointment with one of our AC experts!
