Why Dust on Your Furnace Is More Than Just a Dirty Furnace

Monday, December 21st, 2015 at 11:00 am

Dust is irritating for a lot of reasons. It needs to be cleaned often, as it is always around and accumulating, and it can aggravate allergies and asthma to a high degree. When it comes to your heating unit, dust is no less of a problem, and in fact can lead to a number of issues if it isn’t removed safely. The best way to ensure that a hindering layer of dust isn’t covering your furnace is to call the experts from Climate Masters and schedule a maintenance appointment.

Issues Caused by Dust

Here are some of the common problems caused by excessive dust being trapped in your system and/or coating the parts:

  • Clogged air filters – if you use a furnace or a heat pump, there is an air filter in your system. The job of the air filter is to capture large particles of dirt and dust, but excessive amounts of dust will clog the filter and choke off the air flow in your system. When the air flow is significantly decreased, you will likely experience systemic problems that can include serious malfunction and breakdown.
  • Problems with fuel nozzles and fuel line – if you have a combustion heating system, dust can interfere with both ignition and the right mixing of air and gas by clogging the nozzles. This can be a potentially dangerous situation and also leave you without the heat you need.
  • Friction with moving parts – there tend to be a number of moving parts in heating systems, particularly with furnaces. This is why lubrication is necessary. However, over time, dust particles absorb the lubricant, creating friction and grinding for those components. If the components aren’t cleaned, it will only be a matter of time before malfunction occurs.
