Make Sure Your Furnace is Properly Sized

Monday, January 2nd, 2017 at 11:00 am

So you’re looking around for a new furnace to replace your old heating system. You’ve got the physical measurements for the space that is to accommodate the system, and you manage to find a furnace that fits. Before you have that furnace installed, though, there is a very important question you have to answer: is the furnace properly sized for your home?

Just because the furnace physically fits in the space your home has allotted for it, that doesn’t mean that the system is properly sized for your needs. If the furnace is too large, it will generate too much output for the home. The thermostat will shut it off before it has the chance to complete its cycle, putting it under a lot of stress that it wasn’t designed to deal with. This will cause the furnace to wear down faster than it normally would, increasing the amount of issues that the system will have to deal with. Eventually, you will have to replace the furnace years sooner than you otherwise would.

Installing a furnace that is too small is just as bad as one that is too large. A furnace that is too small will not be able to generate enough output to satisfy the thermostat, forcing it to operate for longer than it was designed to. This is the opposite problem from if the furnace were too large, but it has the same result. Strain on the system increases, making problems more and more frequent. Whether too large or too small, installing a poorly sized furnace will always shorten the life of the system. Make sure that you consult with a professional about how to select a properly sized furnace.
