How Zone Control Can Help You This Fall

Monday, October 24th, 2016 at 11:00 am

Fall is here, and in a few weeks you’ll need to start using your heater to keep comfortable. There are a couple of things that every homeowner should do to get their homes ready for winter. Heating maintenance, for example. If you’re using a centralized forced air system, though, there is another option for improving your heating system. Let’s take a look at zone control, and how it can help you this fall.

Zone Control

A zone control system is designed to split your home into different zones for the purposes of climate control. It does this through the installation of dampers throughout the ductwork. Each of these different dampers opens and closes to control the flow of air through the ducts. Each zone created by these dampers has its own thermostat installed somewhere inside it. When the thermostat requires heat, it activates the heating system and opens the appropriate dampers. The rest of the dampers do not open, ensuring that only the zone that requires heat receives it. Zone control systems give homeowners a much finer degree of control over their indoor climate than typical centralized forced air systems do.

Advantages of Zone Control

Most centralized forced air climate control systems only have two settings: on and off. This wastes a lot of energy on parts of the home that, whether because of differences in sunlight exposure or insulation, need either more or less output. Applying the same amount of output across these rooms creates hot and cold spots throughout the house. A lot of energy is also wasted on empty rooms. A zone control system allows you to set the ideal temperature for each part of your home, as well as avoid wasting output on areas that aren’t being used.
