The Importance of Changing Your Air Conditioner Air Filter

Monday, April 25th, 2016 at 11:00 am

Do you change the air filter in your air conditioner every few months? Did you even know that your air conditioner had an air filter? The air filter is actually one of the most important parts of your air conditioning system, and it also happens to be able to cause one some of the biggest problems. Read on to find out why your air filter is so important.

Air Filter Issues

The air filter in the air conditioning system is designed to prevent debris from getting into the unit. It sits in the air return duct for the system, and all air that flows into the air conditioner moves through the air filter. The air filter does a pretty good job of capturing airborne contaminants, but the problem is that it cannot get rid of them once it has them. The filter needs to be cleaned out every three months or so in order to prevent it from becoming clogged. Otherwise, you’re going to run into other problems.

If the air filter is clogged, all air flow to the evaporator coil will be cut off. The evaporator coil is the part responsible for evaporating refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from the air. If there’s no warm air coming from the ducts, the temperature around the coil will quickly drop below freezing and it will ice over. This will cause all sorts of problems for the system, including an almost complete elimination of output until the ice is removed. If the ice isn’t taken care of in time, the entire system could break down. This is why you need to make sure that you change your air filter, or have it changed, every three months.
