The Importance of Duct Sealing

Monday, September 12th, 2016 at 11:00 am

No matter what season it is, maintaining your ductwork is an important part of keeping your climate control system functioning properly. If the ducts are in poor condition, both your heating and air conditioning systems will suffer. One of the most effective ways to keep your ducts in proper condition is to schedule duct sealing. Read on to find out more about duct sealing, and the benefits that it provides.

Why Duct Sealing is Necessary?

You probably don’t think about your ducts that much, but they need the occasional professional service just like any other system. Ducts develop leaks remarkably easily, whether from mistakes made during installation or years of normal use. While the individual leaks are quite small, they add up quickly. The US Department of Energy has estimated that the average forced air climate control system lose up to 30% of its total output to duct leaks. That’s nearly a third of the total output that you’re paying for going to waste every time you turn on a heater or air conditioner. If you want to prevent those losses, you’re going to need to get your ducts sealed.

How Duct Sealing Works

The most common method used for duct sealing involves painting mastic into the leaks. Mastic is a type of epoxy that is stiff enough to seal the leak, once dry, but flexible enough to move with the ducts without cracking. Depending on the severity of the leak, the mastic is occasionally supplemented with regulation metallic duct tape. This helps to keep the leak fully sealed. You should have your ducts sealed at least once every couple of years, to cope with any new leaks that may form.
