How to Keep Your Indoor Air Quality High This Winter

Monday, December 5th, 2016 at 11:00 am

Even here in Florida, staying warm is going to become a high priority as we move further into winter. Temperature isn’t the only factor you should be paying attention to this winter, though. Indoor air quality tends to suffer during this time of year, and can have substantial negative effects on both the health and comfort of homeowners. Follow our tips below on how to keep your indoor air quality high for the next several months.

Air Cleaners

One of the primary concerns with indoor air quality is the presence of millions of microscopic airborne contaminants. Some of these contaminants include dust, pollen, dander, germs, and mold spores. Normally, these contaminants are dispersed enough that your body can defend against them. That can change in the winter, though, when home heating systems circulate the same stale air for hours at a time. This can concentrate the contaminants into higher doses, leading to allergy attacks, flu, and even asthma. The best way to fix this issue is to install a whole-house air cleaner.

Air cleaners come in a wide variety of types. Ionization cleaners use clouds of ions to draw contaminants out of the air, where they can be collected and disposed of. UV air purifiers use ultraviolet light to sterilize or kill viruses, bacteria, and mold spores. Air filters passively snare contaminants out of the air currents in the home’s ducts. The filter can be cleaned or replaced every few months to prevent it from clogging. All of these systems has the power to improve your indoor air quality. If you’re not sure which one would suit your needs best, have a professional evaluate your home for you.
