Signs That You Need a New Furnace

Monday, January 4th, 2016 at 11:00 am

With prompt repairs and annual maintenance, a furnace can last a pretty long time. However, no matter how well you take care of your furnace there will come a time when it needs to be replaced. It is important that you be able to recognize when that time has come, so that you aren’t caught off-guard when your system breaks down. It’s better to replace the furnace before that happens, then to go without heat during the coldest months of the year while you desperately search for a new system. Let’s take a look at some of the signs that you need to install a new furnace in your home.

Rising Heating Bills

Your heating bills are naturally going to go up during months when you use your furnace more often. That’s not what we’re talking about, though. As a furnace gets older, it will experience a natural decline in efficiency. The system will have to operate for longer in order to accomplish the same temperature changes, which will in-turn drive up your heating bills. If your heating bills are steadily rising for no reason, it may mean that your furnace needs to be replaced.

Needing More Repairs

All furnaces need repairs at one time or another, but older furnaces are far more prone to developing problems. The wear and tear on the system will cause various parts to start failing, sometimes within rapid succession. If your furnace is developing problems every few months, it’s a pretty good indication that it needs to be replaced.

Age

Even if your furnace doesn’t develop any specific problems, it will eventually get old enough that it costs more to operate than to replace. Once a furnace gets older than around 20 years, the cost of repairs and maintenance will far outweigh that of installing a new system. Consult with a professional about getting a new furnace if your current one is over two decades old.
